A lower-intermediate level of spoken and written Japanese equivalent to EAST2300 (Intermediate Japanese 1) Post-A level of Japanese language equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) A2 - B1 or The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 - N3. Also, a pass for EAST1280/EAST2300 (Intermediate Japanese). Enrolment of this module is subject to a placement test unless students have passed EAST2300.

This module is for those who have mastered lower-intermediate Japanese. It aims to further develop knowledge and skills in the use and understanding of written and spoken materials on the basis of grammar mastered in EAST2300 Intermediate Japanese (1) or equivalent. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
To continue Japanese language training, building on lower-intermediate level modules (or equivalent) so as to provide a solid grounding in Japanese grammar and further development of speaking and writing skills.
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1- Demonstrate reading and writing in hiragana and katakana; recognise and use essential kanji characters appropriately.
2- Communicate fluently in Japanese in structured situations, demonstrating improved clarity in phonology, accuracy in grammar and vocabulary, including use of honorific language.
3- Respond to texts on a variety of non-specialist subjects
4- Japanese-English translation skills which identify differences in cultural context for precise translation.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5- Demonstrate confident use of romaji and/or kana as an input method for Japanese in digital contexts
6- Develop cross-cultural communication skills and an awareness of diverse Japanese cultural contexts
